Sorry.. I’m just a poor rice dumpling seller

Have you seen “Xin loi, anh chi la thang ban banh gio” (Sorry, I’m just a poor rice dumpling seller) ?

Aspiring filmmaker Pham Loc made the 25 minute film as his graduation project at film school Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema. Since the short film went online in March it has clocked up over 3.5 million views and has been widely acclaimed for its excellent production values.

Set in Saigon, the film tells the emotional but simple story of a poor boy who sells bánh giò (rice dumplings) and a girl who sells bánh tráng trộn (a spiced cake containing nuts and egg). They fall in love, but the girl’s mother does not approve because the boy is so poor and forbids them from seeing each other.

The story is simple and nothing unusual but the film stands out for its excellent acting, directing and film work. Truly a beautiful work of Vietnamese cinema and a sign that Pham Loc and his co-creators are talented filmmakers to watch out for.

Watch it with someone special, because you will need a hug at the end !

This version on Youtube has been subtitled in English, but the subs are not burned into the film so you can only watch the subbed version on Youtube (if you download it you will lose the subs).

Watch it in 720p or 1080p if you can because this is a beautiful short film about street vendor life in Vietnam !
