Open source Laotian Horror film Nong Hak gets unlikely funding source

Mattie Do is not just the first horror movie director in the People’s Democratic of Laos, but she also claims to be the first female movie director in the country. Or at least she might be if an unlikely source of income helps her in the right direction.

Mattie, along with her partner and writer of the film “Nong Hak” (“Dearest Sister”) Chris Larsen are hoping to create Mattie’s second horror film, with the help of croud-funding website IndieGoGo.

So far, Mattie and her husband Chris have raised over 10,000 dollars of their $30,000 target to make the film, but it’s where the funds have come from and what the couple will do with them that make the project interesting.

Mattie and Chris will be “open-sourcing” their movie’s media so that people at home have access to the raw material that was used to put the film together so that they can re-edit how they choose. And they’re doing this as thanks to the community which has generated a large percentage of their donations. The BitTorrent community.

Head of the popular BitTorrent TV release group EZTV, Novaking chose to put a banner for the indie movie’s funding campaign on the tracker’s website, prompting a massive boost in visits to the indie producer couple’s project and a large spike in donations.

Proving, I don’t know what really… that a bunch of internet pirates will chip in to help a Laotian woman and her husband make the first really kickass horror film from that country ? And they’ll give it away as thanks ?

Whatever the message in this story, it’s nice to see torrent doing something good for the indie film industry by playing Robin Hood and I’m sure the creators of this movie will owe Novaking a little thanks. ;)

Do you want to hear what it’s about ?

Nong Hak tells the story of a village girl from southern Laos who travels to Vientiane to care for her rich cousin who has mysteriously lost her sight, and somehow gained the ability to communicate with the dead. When the poor girl realizes that her cousin is receiving messages from the spirits that allow her to win the lottery, she has to choose between nursing her cousin back to health or keeping sick in order to get rich herself.
